Phillies
Welcome to the
Phillies Group

The Phillies are the most exciting team in Philadelphia and maybe in all of major league baseball. As a fan of the Phillies for over 40 years I thought it would be appropriate to include a section of the site to my favorite team. This site is starting up as of the 2010 season and it is looking like it should be a great season. You'll be able to look hear for the latest from all the major blogs as well as any insight an perspective from this community.

The
intention is to make this section a perfect aggregation and jumping off
point for all things Phillies related. We'll be tracking all the best
Phillies blogs, both local and national as well as providing an
organized list of locations that contain even more Phillies info. If
you love the Phillies or just love a great team then join the group and
stay updated on what's happening with the Fightin's Go Phillies!

Cole struggled a bit but managed his way through 5 and two thirds before being replaced by Chad Durbin. A good sign was Cole coming back from a bad inning and shutting them down for 2 and two thirds. Chase hit a two run shot that scored the winning run but Polanco continues to contribute, batting .500 right now. Baez and Contreras both came in and got the job done while Madson closed it out. The bullpen looks way better than anyone expected, especially this early in the season. The game details are below:

Another win for Halladay as he masterfully pitched his way through all nine innings to a 2-1 victory. He is awesome, all that can be said. His after game interview was great, just a really good guy with a hard driving competitive spirit - Phillies are lucky to have him and he's lucky to be on the Phillies! It was a pitchers game but Jimmy Rollins hit the second pitch of the game out of the park. A great team wins these kinds of games.

And another great game and the Phillies pull it out. Jamie pitched great except for the third inning where he gave up 5 runs starting with a double to the pitcher with 2 outs! It was a disastrous inning but it wasn't all Jamie's fault, Polly had a foo-pa on third that could have ended the inning. Jamie proved he is a veteran though, he gave up only two more hits and no more runs through the next three innings. If Cole could learn how to do this he would be a much, much better pitcher. Jamie is amazing.
Polly had another great game, he is quickly becoming a favorite player of mine. The guy is amazing at the plate, right he is batting .542 and I think he has 8 RBIs already. Clearly, this guy is a clutch player and will help win lots of games. It is also clear he fits in well, he and Ryan appear to be good friends. Polanco is still working his way into the third base position but he has already made some incredible plays, at least to equal to that of Pedro. Speaking of Pedro, he is on the Astro's and they had him playing 1st base! He played it really well too. I like Pedro so I hope he does well there.

The Phillies looked great once again tonight. Happ gave 'em 5 good innings with the BP coming in and doing an excellent job as well. Raul broke out tonight hitting two doubles with a few RBIs, that was good to see. Everyone got a hit tonight but Shane, he went 0-5 but made solid contact all night - he'll get his before this series is over. The Phils just exploded with 16 hits and now averaging 8 runs per game thru the first four. So far so good, in fact better than good. The pitching, especially the BP looks better than anticipated, especially this early in the year. Tomorrow the old man goes to work, I hope can watch some of it.

The Phillies tried as they kept coming back from deficits the entire game. Kyle struggled through 4 innings before getting pulled, it was 5-3 Nationals. Early in the game they did great moving guys around the bases and getting runs but as the game prgressed they left too many guys on. A mistake by the third base coach probably costs the Phils a run, but they left quite a few on base after that. Werth seemed to break out a bit, with 3 doubles. They were in postion to at least tie the game in the 9th but once again Vistorino left two stranded trying to do too much. They move on to Houston for 3 before coming to Philly for the home opener on Monday.

WP: Halladay (He was awesome, 9 SOs, 1 run)
The Phillies looked like what they are, the national league champs. Just an awesome performance, Placido with the Salami (Grand Slam) and Howard with a 2 run Homer. Everybody contributed today, even the BP held them off for the two final innings. A great start to the season. Feels good to have them back on!
As a side note, the Eagles traded Donavon, about time if you ask me.

Philles-Yankees Spring Training 2010
The Phillies played the Yankees in the Spring Training opener (not counting the game against FSU), they won the game but we were not able to make it through the entire game - it was freezing! The temperature was 45 with 20 mph winds, a sunny but very, very cold day. In spite of that I managed to grab some photos.
Week One Rotation
Notice the rotation for the opener? We are leaving Wednesday morning for the opener in Tampa against the Yankee's and it looks like Halladay will be throwing (about 45 pitches). I'd like to see Cole as well, especially the split-finger fastball but he is on for Friday. The game is televised via Comcast - tape delayed. Make sure to check it out...
Spring is in the air and another great season of Baseball is upon us, should be a great year for Phillies phans!
The article from PhillsNation is below:
Week One Rotation -
Spring training games start Wednesday. Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer released the rotation for the first week of pre-season play. The starters will throw about 45 pitches, but it is a sign that the regular season is right around the corner.
Wednesday, March 3 vs. Florida State University: J.A Happ, Phillipe Aumont, Drew Naylor, Yohan Flande, Joe Savery, Jesus Sanchez, and David Herdon.
Thursday, March 4 vs. New York Yankees: Roy Halladay, Kyle Kendrick, Jose Contreras, Andrew Carpenter, and Sergio Escalona. Game will be televised (tape delay) on Comcast Sportsnet and MLB Network.
Friday, March 5 at Toronto Blue Jays: Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer.
Saturday, March 6 at Pittsburgh Pirates: Joe Blanton
Happ will also pitch on Sunday, Kendrick will pitch on Monday, and Halladay will pitch on Tuesday.

Spring Training Underway
PHILLIES SPRING TRAINING UNDERWAY
Well its official, Phillies spring training is underway with the pitchers and catchers showing up last week to start team workouts. According to everything I've read things are looking good with the team in terms of injuries and recovery. Lidge was the only member of the staff that is a little behind, stating that he should be able to start throwing next week.
The best news, I think, was regarding Cole Hamels. Apparently, according to Dubee (love the name!) Cole worked the entire off-season even taking his glove and ball on vacation. Cole said he actually
threw against a tennis wall! Everybody that follows the Phillies knows that Cole is a critical piece of the team and his performance last year was less then stellar. I think we can expect him to be back in top form this year! Halladay is likely to help motivate Cole since they'll be together from the beginning of the season, would have been to nice to have Cliff here as well! According to reports Cole talked with both Lefty and Cliff about using a split-fastball but he is apparently planning on curve-ball work through spring training - his curve ball was scary bad last year!

Live Chat Tomorrow @10 am
LIVE CHAT TOMORROW
Just a repost here, nothing to add other than these chats are usually pretty good so if you have the time stop by, the link and even a reminder capability is below from PhilliesNation:
Live Chat Tomorrow @10 am - Hey All, hope you’ll join us for another Phillies Nation Live Chat tomorrow morning at 10 as we get prepared for pitchers and catchers down in Clearwater. The central thesis of the discussion tomorrow will be “What do you want to see from the Phillies during Spring Training?” After a long, cold winter that continues to tighten its grip, this should be a great way to warm us all up to the thought of baseball once again. Pat Gallen will be at the keyboard as the narrator to discuss all things Phillies on what is an important day for fans everywhere. It will certainly be exciting to talk about the prospects of Roy Halladay, the fifth starter spot, the youngsters trying to make a name for themselves, and the health of the bullpen. Hope to see you all tomorrow at 10 am for the Phillies Nation Live Chat!

Milestone Watch: 2010

SOME MAJOR MILESTONES
TO BE SET IN 2010
See the list below published at PhilliesNation earlier today. This is one extensive list, I didn't realize there were so many milestones within reach of so many players. What is crazy is that all of these could actually happen, even the not-so-good ones like Ryan and Raul reaching 1,000 strikeouts. My favorites are Chase Utley reaching 200 home runs and Cole Hamels reaching 1,000 strikeouts (unlikely this year). The J-Rol 2000 hit mark is practically unreachable in one season given that he needs 371 hits but at lead-off it would guarentee the Phillies lots and lots of runs.
Independent of the milestones let's hope Brad and Cole come back this year and regain some of their 2008 form, if they can the Phillies should have another World Series season, ain't nothing like it! We're getting close, less than three weeks for the spring training opener!
The football season is over, hockey and basketball are only now approaching the final quarter of their regular seasons, and pitchers and catchers are mere days from reporting to their Spring Training camp sites. Oh, it’s time for baseball, all right.

12 Spring Training Games will be Televised
Looks like quite a few Phillies spring training games are going to be televised this year, very cool. As I said in an earlier post we'll be at the opener against the Yankees on March 4th. I think they only televised a few spring training games last year but this stands to be and even more exciting season.
Go Phillies
Thank God. Spring Training is nearly here, and you’ll all be able to see 12 games on the tube. Here is the press release straight from the Philles: Fans will be able to access 26 of the 32 Phillies spring training games via TV, radio and/or internet. The 2010 schedule features 9 televised games at Bright House Field in Clearwater, two broadcasts from the road in Florida and one at Citizens Bank Park. Phillies spring training will also air on 1210 WPHT for 14 games and phillies.com will stream six games live. Comcast SportsNet will carry three games including the New York Yankees match-up on March 4. The Phillies will air on myPHL17 three times including the final spring training game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 3 as part of the On-Deck Series held at Citizens Bank Park. The Comcast Network will broadcast four games against American League teams in Clearwater including a St. Patrick’s Day telecast against the Yankees. ESPN has picked up a game at home against the New York Yankees on March 22 as well as on the road opposite the Atlanta Braves on March 24.

Spring Training
We bought tickets to the spring training opener down in Clearwater on March 4th. As is tradition, the Phillies will open up against the Yankees as the previous year's World Series contenders.
There isn't much of a reason to believe it won't be the same two teams again this year. That'd be fine with me, in fact I'd prefer another shot at the Yankees. I'm sure the rest of the feels that way as well.
My wife and brother are headed down with me where we'll be staying with my niece Nicole the night before the game. It's a 1:00pm game but we'll plan on getting there around 11:00am to catch warmups and get some photos of the team.
We are headed down to key Colony after the game for a mini-vacation but I'll start my Phillies season of posting that night, pictures and all. I'm hoping to see Halladay throw a few innings along with some of the new members of the bullpen.
As my first spring training, I am really looking forward to it. Should be a great season.

Phillies 2010
It is December and the winter meetings in Indianapolis are officially over, lots of people wonder why these meetings even happen anymore since there is real-time communication everywhere (Twitter, Facebook, etc). Of course this is a silly position to take, the meetings connect people - real-people in real-time which is still a pretty important thing. I love the winter meetings, lots of palm pressing and maneuvering with a little deception and ultimately always some level of drama. I personally think this is a very important part of baseball.
As of yesterday the Phils gave up Cliff Lee to Seattle for a few minor league players while at the same time signing Roy Halladay to a 3 year deal worth about 60 million. According to the reports Toronto is giving Philly 6 million and is getting the three best minor league prospects we have. Namely Kyle Drabeck and Michael Taylor, that's part of the reason for the Seattle deal.
An analogy I used on the Phillies Nation blog in describing the way I felt about the deals is the following:
"I found out earlier today I won a brand new Ferrari, I went and picked it up and was amazed at how awesome this car really is (Roy Halladay). On the way home I totaled the car and hadn't yet gotten insurance (Lee trade)."
I think that accurately summarize my range of emotions once I heard and understood what had transpired. I spent the next few hours reading the blogs and trying to rationalize the decision - can't do it. I think the Halladay deal is a fantastic one for the Phillies but the Lee deal was terrible.
